Overview

All about the Tiji Festival at Mustang (Tour) in Nepal

Upper Mustang

The Upper Mustang trek takes you to the hidden Buddhist kingdom of Mustang, also known as Lo. Once part of Tibet, Mustang shares strong cultural, language, and geographical ties with Tibet.

Cut off from the outside world, Mustang has kept its Tibetan traditions and natural beauty. Located in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri range, the land is dry and rugged, with colorful rock formations. Amidst this barren landscape, you’ll see white-painted houses, barley fields, and chortens (Buddhist shrines) decorated with prayer flags.

The trek follows the old salt trade route, where traders once exchanged Tibetan salt for grains from the lowlands. The final stop is Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang. As you climb the Lo La pass (3,950m), the medieval walled city appears, its tall white walls standing out against the harsh landscape.

Explore Mustang’s untouched beauty and rich culture as you walk its ancient trails. Discover the secrets of Lo and experience the timeless charm of its majestic capital, Lo Manthang.

Tiji Festival

Experience the Tiji Festival, a special three-day event held every year in Lo-Manthang, Upper Mustang. This ancient festival comes from Tibetan traditions and celebrates the victory of Dorjee Sonnu (a form of Lord Buddha) over the destructive demon Man Tam Ru.

The name "Tiji" means "Prayer for World Peace." Held in May, the festival features colorful dances performed by monks from Choedhe Monastery. These dances tell the story of how Dorjee Sonnu defeated the demon and brought peace to the land. Short descriptions about the festival are given below:

Day 1: The Festival Begins

At noon, the Tiji Festival starts with the deep, echoing sounds of Dhungchen (Tibetan horns), drums, and cymbals. Monks and performers march from the monastery to the main square, where a giant Thangka (sacred painting) hangs. The first masked dance, "Tsa Chaam," begins—a dramatic retelling of Dorje Jono’s triumph over evil.

Day 2: The Battle Against Evil

On the second day, monks perform the "Nga Cham" dance, showing Dorje Jono’s attempt to send the demon back to the Buddha realm. Women in traditional dresses and jewelry join the ceremony, while the dance creates a sacred space with celestial deities.

Day 3: Victory Celebration

The final day opens with ceremonial music, followed by the energetic "Rha Chaam" dance—a celebration of evil’s defeat. The festival ends in a burst of music, dancing, and gunfire. A monk (playing Dorje Sonam) throws a Tsampa (barley flour) effigy of the demon Ma Tam Ru Ta, symbolizing its destruction.

Lo-Manthang, hidden in the remote mountains of Upper Mustang, is a place of rich Tibetan culture. Cut off from the outside world, it has kept its traditions alive. The landscape is dotted with whitewashed houses, barley fields, and prayer flags, making it a truly unique and magical place.

Altitude Sickness During Tiji Festival Trek

Altitude sickness, also called Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), happens when your body struggles to get enough oxygen at high elevations. Since the air is thinner in the mountains compared to sea level, people who don’t adjust properly can experience AMS.

In extreme cases, high-altitude trekking can lead to dangerous conditions like HAPE (fluid in the lungs) or HACE (swelling in the brain). However, on the Tiji Festival Trek in Upper Mustang, the risk is low. The highest point is 4,200 meters, and the route is designed for proper acclimatization, with enough rest days.

Very few trekkers report AMS, HAPE, or HACE on this trek. The slow pace and careful planning help prevent altitude-related problems, making it a safer high-altitude journey.
